Hot Tub Water Change
For hot tubs used in a domestic setting, we recommend a complete water change at least every 3-4 months.
Please note that this is a guideline only, and you are advised to change water more frequently based on:
- How much water your hot tub holds
- How many people use your hot tub daily
- The method you use to sanitize your hot tub
- If you are struggling to maintain a safe and healthy water balance
If your hot tub is used in a business setting (ie. a holiday let) then there is a legal requirement for these systems to be managed and controlled in proportion to the risk.
You can find detailed requirements and obligations in Health & Safety Executive HSG282.
Section 1, paragraph 79 of HSG282 states (in part) "After each period of hire, the spa pool should be completely drained, cleaned, refilled, disinfected and drained again. When stored, the spa pool should be dry, including the insides of the pipework, as far as practicable."
Why do I need to change the water in my hot tub?
Every time your hot tub is used, new contaminants are introduced into the water.
This includes sweat, skin cells, hair, and care products like body lotions, shampoo, and deodorants.
Sanitizer neutralizes these contaminants, but over time, the water becomes saturated with these dissolved substances (known as total dissolved solids, or TDS) and your sanitizer is no longer able to work effectively.
Only a water change will overcome this issue.
